Job summary:

This hands-on position supports R&D, product and prototype testing, and product engineering mainly by refining conceptual ideas/designs, testing and converting them to finished detailed drawings.  This involves continual design optimization to improve manufacturing efficiency.

Summary of essential job functions:

CAD design & documentation:

  • Produce CAD wiring diagrams, circuit schematics and assembly drawings for new products in cooperation with design teams consisting of engineers, designers and R&D staff.

  • Complete ECRs by utilizing PDM and other tools.

Development project activities:

  • Work with vendors, purchasing, technicians, and manufacturing as required to produce designed products.

  • Communicate with manufacturing and suppliers to develop cost effective parts designs.

  • Release drawings to manufacturing and facilitate manufacturing progress throughout the pre-production cycle.

  • Identify design or documentation issues and solve problems.

  • Test and troubleshoot new electronic prototypes.

Project management & leadership:

  • Assist R&D lab manager in designing and performing tests on existing products or prototypes.

Other duties as assigned, such as field technical support as needed.

Required Education: 

B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.

Required Experience: 

5-10 years of experience with analog and digital circuits, microcontrollers and power electronics.

  • Taking prototype designs from test thru the production engineering process.

  • Serial, USB and CAN bus communications.

  • EMI and RFI shielding.

  • Hands-on circuit debug, troubleshoot and repair using DMM’s, oscilloscopes and function generators.

  • Soldering and desoldering of surface mount and thru hole components.

  • 3 phase current, voltage, power, PF and THD measurement.

  • Prototype circuit board assembly and test.

  • NI data acquisition hardware and Labview software.

  • PID control loop tuning experience would be helpful.

Knowledge:

  • Circuit board manufacturing and assembly processes - fab, stuff, test, and conformal coating.
  • Test fixture design and automatic test equipment.

  • Familiar with 3 phase alternators, voltage regulators and engine governors.

  • Transducers - RPM, air flow, temperature, frequency, vibration, pressure, strain and proximity.

  • Schematic and PCB design software.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Capable of using and applying ANSI design and drafting standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to finish conceptual design, build prototypes, test new circuits, troubleshoot and refine designs for release to production.
